Jetstar Privacy Policy

This Privacy Statement explains in general terms how Jetstar Airways protects the privacy of your personal information under the National Privacy Principles. It will apply to any personal information you provide to us in the course of your dealings with us.
This Privacy Statement will also apply to any information about you that is provided to us by someone else such as a travel agent.
This Privacy Statement does not apply to employee records, which are generally exempt from the legislation.

What information do we collect?

The types of personal information that we collect from you will depend on the circumstances of collection and on the type of service you request from us. For example, we may collect details such as your name, address, flight and other travel details, credit/debit card number and expiry date, billing address, telephone numbers, loyalty program membership details and health issues relevant to your travel arrangements. As we are required by law to obtain your consent to the collection of "sensitive information" we will assume that you have consented to the collection of all information which is provided to us for use in accordance with this Statement, unless you tell us otherwise.

How we collect information

We may collect personal information about you when you deal with us over the telephone, send us correspondence (whether by letter, fax or e-mail), visit our web site or when you have contact with us in person. As well as collecting information directly from you, there may be occasions when we collect information about you from a third party.

For example:

  • from people making travel or freight bookings on your behalf;
  • from third party telesales companies that collect your personal information and disclose it to us so that we may issue you with your ticket and make and fulfil your travel arrangements or market our products and services to you;
  • from other service providers who collect information on our behalf;
  • from market research companies contracted by us to obtain information so that we may improve and market our products and services; and
  • from other organisations that issue an Air Waybill on our behalf for the carriage of your freight.
How we use your personal information

We generally collect your personal information for the following purposes:

  • to process your travel and freight arrangements and other transactions;
  • to facilitate your participation in loyalty programs of other organisations; and
  • to conduct marketing activities and market research.

Some of the personal information we collect will be essential for us to be able to accurately identify who is using the service. Other types of personal information we collect will help us to profile who is using our services and what their interests are.

Disclosure of personal information to third parties

We may disclose your personal information to third parties, for example, to our contractors to whom we contract out certain services, other carriers, travel and freight service providers, loyalty program providers, data processing companies (including operators of global distribution systems and payment clearing houses) for the purpose for which the information was collected or for related purposes, for example, to complete a transaction on your behalf or provide you with a service that you requested.

We may also disclose your personal information to various law enforcement agencies and governments around the world for security, customs and immigration purposes.

Your information will also be shared between related companies in the Qantas Group where necessary to fulfil our purposes (and other purposes specified in this policy) 
We engage third party contractors to perform services for us, which involves the contractor handling personal information we hold.
For example to:

  • provide e-mail and mail handling services;
  • provide electronic funds transfer services, credit card account processing and related services;
  • operate call centres;
  • operate some corporate travel sales and fulfilment functions;
  • conduct market research;
  • provide catering services;
  • provide ground handling services, such as check in agents, freight handling and special assistance; and
  • assist with obtaining payment from creditors.

In these situations, we will prohibit the third party contractor from using personal information about you except for the specific purpose for which we supply it.

Jetstar’s reservations system and the reservations systems of certain airlines that are associated with Jetstar are hosted in the same computer system and we have security measures in place prohibiting the airlines and their contractors and agents from accessing your personal information.

Other than the above, we will not disclose your personal information without your consent unless disclosure is either necessary to prevent a threat to life or health, authorised or required by law, reasonably necessary to enforce the law or necessary to investigate a suspected unlawful activity.

Additional information for job applicants

If you apply or register your interest for a position with Jetstar we may collect your personal information including your name, CV and contact details. We sometimes engage service providers to assist us in the recruitment process, including recruitment agencies, security organisations and recruitment website operators. Where we do this we may exchange your personal information with those service providers, who may be located outside Australia. In some cases those service providers may collect your personal information directly and retain it for their own purposes, so you should ensure that you are aware of their privacy policies. We may also exchange your personal information with any referees nominated by you. Some of the personal information we request during the recruitment process we are required to collect under workplace and security laws. If we are unable to collect your personal information, we may not be able to consider you for employment with Jetstar.

Access to and correction of information we hold about you

We will, on request, provide you with access to the information we hold about you, including for the purpose of correcting or updating that information, unless there is an exception under the National Privacy Principles.
We may recover from you our reasonable costs of supplying you with access to this information.
Your request to provide access to this information will be dealt with in a reasonable time.
If we refuse to provide you with access to the information, we will provide you with reasons for the refusal and inform you of any exceptions relied upon under the National Privacy Principles.

Keeping your personal information up-to-date

We will take reasonable steps to ensure that your personal information is accurate, complete, and up-to-date whenever we collect or use it.
If the personal information we hold about you is inaccurate, incomplete or out-of-date please contact us and we will take reasonable steps to either correct this information, or if necessary, discuss alternative action with you.

Transfer of information overseas

We may transfer to people in foreign countries any of your personal information to fulfil the purposes set out in this Privacy Statement, for example:

  • to our offices overseas;
  • to data processors (including operators of global travel distribution systems); and
  • airlines, hotels and other travel and freight service providers.

In most cases the transfer will be necessary for the performance of our contract with you or for the implementation of pre-contractual measures taken in response to a request by you or for the performance of a contract with a third party which is concluded in your interests. Please let us know if you have any objections to such transfers.

Qantas Frequent Flyer Program and Qantas Club

We have been appointed to administer and operate the booking service for Qantas & Jetstar Any Seat Awards bookings (on Jetstar Airways, Jetstar Asia and Valuair flights only) through the Qantas Frequent Flyer program. Additional information is collected by us through your registration with, and participation in, the Qantas Frequent Flyer program and/or membership of Qantas Club. Accordingly, we may disclose information about you to Qantas for those purposes.

Information on your Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club membership and participation is used for additional purposes which members consent to as part of the terms and conditions of membership. Membership of and participation in the Qantas Frequent Flyer program and Qantas Club is subject to the program terms and conditions which can be viewed online at qantas.com

Resolving your concerns

If you wish to gain access to your personal information, have a complaint about a breach of your privacy or you have any query on how your personal information is collected or used please forward your request, complaint or query to the address below. We will respond to your query or complaint as soon as possible. Privacy complaints about our acts or practices may be investigated by the Privacy Commissioner who has the power to make a determination including a declaration that the claimant is entitled to compensation.

The information we collect

Whenever it is reasonable and practicable to do so, we only collect information about you directly from you.

We only collect personal information about you which is reasonably necessary to:

  • maintain your contact details

  • race
  • political or religious beliefs
  • sexual preferences
  • criminal convictions
  • membership of professional or trade associations or unions
  • health information.

We collect health information where we offer products with an insurance component to our customers. We do not use or share that information for any purpose other than the underwriting or administration of a customer's policy, claim or account, or as otherwise disclosed to the customer when the information was collected.

We also collect personal information from people who submit applications or register interest for employment with Macquarie Group. Please read the Career Privacy Policy for more information.

How that information is used

We only use and disclose personal information about you for the purpose for which it was disclosed to us or related purposes which would reasonably be expected without your permission.

For example, we may from time to time use your personal information to inform you of investment opportunities or to provide information about products and services which we expect may be of interest to you. However, we do respect your right to ask us not to do this.

We do not sell personal information to other organisations to allow them to do this.

We may share personal information inside the Macquarie Group, and may disclose personal information outside the Macquarie Group:

  • as required by applicable laws or rules, such as those relating to Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing
  • to service providers in, or outside of, Australia who provide services in connection with our products and services
  • to your nominated financial adviser with your permission.

Laws and rules regarding the use of personal information may vary by jurisdiction. Macquarie Group complies with applicable laws and rules in the related jurisdiction.

Keeping information accurate and up to date

We take all reasonable steps to ensure that all information we hold is as accurate as is possible. You are able to contact us at any time and ask for its correction if you feel the information we have about you is inaccurate or incomplete.

Keeping information secure

We use security procedures and the latest technology to protect the information we hold. Access to and use of personal information within Macquarie Group is appropriately limited to prevent misuse or unlawful disclosure of the information.

If other organisations provide support services, we require them to appropriately safeguard the privacy of the information provided to them.

Where the personal information we collect is no longer required, we delete the information or permanently de-identify it.

How you can access your information

You can contact us to request access to your information. In normal circumstances we will give you full access to your information. However, there may be some legal or administrative reasons to deny access. If access is denied, we will provide you with the reason why.

Cookies

A 'cookie' is a packet of information placed on a user's computer by a website for record keeping purposes. Cookies are generally used on Macquarie Group sites to:

  • access online services - if you visit a Macquarie Group website and log into our secure areas we will use cookies to enable us to authorise your access
  • manage advertising - we use advertising companies to deliver our online advertising. When you see one of our ads on a third party website, cookies are sometimes used to collect information about what pages you visit and the type of software you are using
  • traffic monitoring - we use tracking companies to gather information about how people are using the Macquarie site, this information includes time of visit, pages visited, and some system information about the type of computer you are using. We use this information to enhance the content and services offered on the site.

Cookies may also be used for other purposes on Macquarie Group sites but in each case none of the information collected can be used to personally identify you.

Dealing with Macquarie Group online

If you visit a Macquarie Group website to browse, read or download information, our system will log these movements. These web site logs are not personally identifiable and Macquarie Group makes no attempt to link them with the individuals who browse the site.

Your account information is password protected and we recommend you do not divulge your password to anyone. To further protect your personal information, your log-in time will automatically expire after a certain period of inactivity.
